The Vanavarayar family has lived in the areas surrounding Shenbaga Vilasam for nearly 2000 years. It is this rich legacy that is reflected in the mansion today. Built more than a century ago, it is a fine example of South Indian architecture, and a reflection of the family's standing. Raja Shankar Vanavarayar, present day scion of the family, opened Shenbaga Vilasam to visitors in 2007, saying that it is "a place where we want to portray our culture and tradition in the real sense to the visitor, where one is made to feel at home here and yet experience everything that is South Indian"
Colourful and vibrant, with beautifully crafted details typical of the area, the homestead offers 4 bedrooms. Vivid, hand dyed Chettinad tiles and massive wooden pillars pay tribute to the expertise of long ago craftsmen. In the formal sitting room, with its open roof, one catches glimpses of long ago gatherings and soirees. The mansion's many verandahs and porticos are wonderful places for lazing around. Each of the four rooms is named after the women of the family: Manickam, Maruthapusham, Radhamani, Jaya.
Shenbaga Vilaasam features a priceless collection of family heirlooms and the antiques that have been amassed over time.
